He was strictly a private citizen and never held any public office but in all matters and enterprises was among the foremost in public spirit for building Clarksville's turnpikes, bridges and other enterprises. After retiring from his practice, he moved to his farm on Hopkinsville road. He was extensively engaged in the tobacco business. By 1887 only five of his eleven children were still alive: William McClure Drane, Walter H. Drane, Dr. Henry T. Drane, Mrs. Jennie E. Johnson and Edward Drane. He died at his home October 30th, 1865.
