dc.description | On the front of the post card is a sketched map of Fort Donelson. The back has a caption that says, “The capture of Fort Donelson by Union forces opened the Cumberland River to clear the way for the invasion of the South and elevated Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant from an unknown, unproven leader to the rank of Major General and earned him the nickname ‘Unconditional Surrender’. It was the North’s first major victory of the war.” | |
